Ways To Support Your Local Library

Libraries are an integral part of society, and must be preserved.

In the first few weeks of March 2025, the Trump administration signed an executive order to eliminate all “non-statutory components and functions” at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), though it is still unclear what these non-statutory components constitute. This has, understandably so, caused an uproar within the library community with many organizations condemning the action, including the American Library Association.

Let’s be very clear – attacking and defunding libraries causes more of a detriment than a benefit. And to fight back against a regime that seeks to oppress free and publicly-available information, knowledge, and data, it’s going to take a group effort. Here are just a few simple ways to support your local libraries and ensure that they continue to do good work for the communities they serve.

Get/Use A Library Card

This is seemingly the most obvious thing on the list, and yet, something that many forget! Having a library card comes with benefits such as access to millions of archived books, magazines, audio/video discs, educational/entertainment events, and so much more!

Support/Volunteer For Programs

Even if you don’t have a library card (still get one, though!), you can support libraries by offering your time and energy to volunteer for any specialized programs they may have such as free classes and workshops. It’s a great way to give back and to also meet new people who believe in the same vision of fighting for the safety and preservation of libraries.

Work For The Library

Now, as someone who worked in a research library facility for eight years, this may be biased on my part. But it’s still worth mentioning! If you’re truly passionate about books, information and literacy and want to make a real difference, go ahead and apply for any available library positions you might find! Keep in mind – while many library workers happen to be librarians, you do not have to be a librarian to work in a library.

Thank The Staff

Librarians and other library employees are essential to keeping the heart of their branches alive and well. The next time you visit the library, thank the staff you see there! Let them know their work is appreciated and noticed, that they are important and needed, and that they help to keep our communities going.

Donate Money/Items

One of the best ways to support libraries is by giving money and resources. With library funding now under attack on a federal level, contributing whatever you can helps to keep libraries properly-funded so they can continue providing necessary services to the public.

Contact Local Representatives

Speaking to your elected representatives is a great way to voice your concerns and opinions and bring attention to issues that directly affect your community, such as the importance of libraries. You can write them a formal letter, have a phone call, send an email, or even visit a town hall meeting in your area.

Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, libraries have a long history of not always receiving the support they need. Now, it’s even more dire to speak up on these issues, do what we can to keep library culture alive and well, and ensure that many generations continue to reap the benefits of having them! Please keep supporting these valuable institutions however and whenever possible, because having them around benefits us all.
